Lean Six Sigma, what have I missed?

Alexander Jones • 24 January 2023

How has LSS changed throughout the years...

Lean Six Sigma is a project management approach that combines the principles of Lean and Six Sigma to improve efficiency and reduce defects. It was originally developed in the manufacturing industry in the 1980s and has since been adopted by organizations in a variety of industries. Here's a look at how Lean Six Sigma has evolved over the years:

The emergence of Lean

Lean principles were first developed by Toyota in the 1970s as a way to increase efficiency and reduce waste. These principles were later adopted by other organizations in the manufacturing industry and became known as Lean manufacturing.

Development of Six Sigma

Six Sigma was developed by Motorola in the 1980s as a way to improve quality and reduce defects. It was based on statistical analysis and focused on identifying and eliminating defects in processes.

Combination of Lean and Six Sigma

In the 1990s, the principles of Lean and Six Sigma were combined to create Lean Six Sigma. This approach brought together the focus on efficiency and waste reduction of Lean with the focus on quality and defect reduction of Six Sigma.

Expansion beyond manufacturing

In the 2000s, Lean Six Sigma began to be adopted by organizations in a variety of industries, including healthcare, finance, and education. It became a widely-used project management approach.

Evolving tools and techniques

Over the years, the tools and techniques used in Lean Six Sigma have evolved and become more sophisticated. For example, the use of data analytics and machine learning has become more prevalent in recent years.

Overall, Lean Six Sigma has come a long way since its inception in the 1980s. It has evolved from a manufacturing-focused approach to a widely-used project management tool that is used in a variety of industries. As the approach has evolved, so have the tools and techniques used in Lean Six Sigma, with a greater focus on data analytics and machine learning in recent years.
